Finally, The Big Reveal

If you've been following along, you know we recently purchased new furniture for our living room and family room.  While the family room furniture had to be swapped and is now on order, the living room furniture arrived right on time.

The new furniture was so different from what we had that I wanted to paint and get new carpet and window treatments.  The painting I really wanted to get done before the furniture arrived so I didn't have to worry about covering things.

I went out and got 3 samples and immediately narrowed it to two as one was too blue.  I painted big squares of the colors side by side on the wall behind the love seat and let them sit there for about a week so we could observe them in different lights as well as compare them.

As you can see the old color was a deep burgundy and fairly dark.  I really wanted to go a lot lighter to make the room seem bigger.  After consideration, we chose the color on the right.  It looked like very light grey with an occasional blue tinge depending on the light.  We felt the other color would be too dark and too grey.

We worked our butts off and got the room painted over a Friday evening and a full day on Saturday.  When the two coats were on and dried, I was really dismayed because the paint, called "Cloudy Day" ended up looking like a very pale blue.  At that point there was no more time to repaint and I felt like it might be better to wait.  I hung up one of the window scarves I had purchased and immediately felt that it was too light but I left it as I wanted to see it with the furniture in place.

When the furniture was delivered, Mr. Helen called and said that the paint looked GREAT with the furniture.  He also said I was right and I should order the darker scarves for the windows.  Once I got home and saw everything, I still wasn't thrilled with the paint but again, wanted to wait it out.  I also felt like I wasn't going to like the rug I'd chosen so we put it still rolled up in the living room while we waited for the new window scarves to arrive.

When they did, we loved them but I was correct about thinking I wouldn't like the rug with the new/better window treatments.  So I went on a mad hunt for a rug.  Just as I was about to give up until after our vacation, I found the same rug I had originally picked but in a different color scheme - however, it was online only which was why we'd not seen it.  Even better, it was on sale and I found a promo code for it and had it shipped to the store. We were able to pickup and return the other rug in one trip. Just last Friday it arrived.  As soon as we rolled it out, we loved it.

The corner with the love seat.  You can see here that I had burgundy window scarves before.  I like a scarf treatment because we have those half shutters.  You can also see the new end table I'd wanted for the space next to the love seat.

Sofa View

View as you come in our front door.  The new carpet is by Mowhawk Home.  The pattern is Dawson and the color is Shell

View from dining room door.  Window treatments are by Royal Velvet.  The style is Lantana and the color is Mercury.  The furniture itself is American made in North Carolina by Klaussner Furniture.  The fabric is called Halo and the color is Gunmetal.

So here's the thing, I'm still not loving the wall color and honestly feel I'm going to end up repainting it once again before the winter comes. But overall we are thrilled with our new look. I especially love that I managed to keep things a bit neutral so that if I want to change the window scarves and pillows on the sofas I can.  Now, I've got to start working on artwork for the walls.

  1. The room seems so much bigger with the lighter wall color - I absolutely love how it turned out!

    1. Making the room look bigger is the exact reason I wanted a lighter color Biz!

  2. So pretty. Honestly, I like before AND after! The important thing is, is the furniture comfortable? (The very expensive couch that I FINALLY delegated to the dog room was never comfortable.)

The rug is very cool. I'm interested that you found what you liked online. I still haven't found rugs for LR/DR, and I've been reluctant to order online because the color might be different once it got here.

    1. The furniture is comfortable but Mr. Helen says he's having to "get used to" only having 2 cushions on the sofa instead of 3.

Honestly, I looked online for area rugs out of desperation as I'd been everywhere within about a 20 mile radius and couldn't find anything. As it turned out the original was purchased at Home Depot in the store and the one we kept was Home Depot online so it made sense to order it and have it sent to the store. That way if we didn't like it, we could leave it there and get a refund!

  3. I think it looks very sophisticated with the new color and window treatments. And the couch, too.

Gives me maybe some courage to try a gray color.

    1. As you pointed out in a previous post, there are so many different shades of grey. I'm sure you could find one to your liking and I think it's a nice change of pace when you want neutral but not beige.

  4. It's here! It's here! Reveal day is here!

And it was well worth the wait! Everything is so lovely, Helen. Soft and serene...ahhh. (I did like the vibrancy of the 'before' room, though.)

    1. It took us a few days to get used to coming through the door and not seeing that vibrancy but we are enjoying the change now.

    1. Double is size is a hard trick in these New England colonials so we're happy!

  7. First of all, Klaussner! Such a small world - I've been to Klaussner Furniture in Raleigh, NC, twice now, while shopping with Sam. I love that they make their upholstered furniture to order AND in NC! He's got a couple of theater chairs on order from them and also a dining set. But I digress...

Love the shape of the new sofa and loveseat. Love the color, love the rug, love the window treatment. And, I actually like the wall color. I guess if you repaint to a true light gray, the entire room would be more monochromatic, which would be fine, but to me the (very) pale blue works with the furniture and rug (at least in the pictures - I know things look different in person).

Also, and this is just a thought, have you every tried the daylight incandescent light bulbs for your lamps? I switched over last year (and am in the process of changing my can lights in the ceiling as the old ones burn out) - they give me such a brighter, whiter light and I feel like it makes a big difference on cloudy/overcast days in my mood.

    1. Small world indeed! I have to say I like so many of the pieces in the Klaussner catalog and when I went back to order the sectional I was delighted to find it was Klaussner as well. I guess that confirms I like their style.

I'm not sure if I've ever tried the daylight bulbs or not but I'll have to look for those. I just know I don't want some of those new energy saving ones - the light is terrible.

  8. I think it's lovely. I hate to paint so much, that I'm afraid it would stay that color until it really needed re-painting at my house. Besides, I like the color. My family room is a grayish-blue, and I love it, of course blue is my favorite color.

    1. I hate to paint that much too but I will hate it more if I continue to feel I don't really love the color lol!

  11. I love it all, the combination of the color with the furniture. My taste is more the way it looks now than before. I can't see how the color is for real but if you are unhappy with it and stay unhappy with it: just do it again. You're in that room every day. But to me it looks perfect.

Enjoy your new furniture and redecorated room.

    1. This is much more my style too Fran. I'm letting the color sit for a bit - we'll see.

  12. I could see white chair rail around the room and the darker blue color on the bottom to add some visual interest and a cottage type feel? I like the light gray...and the rug. Very pretty.

    1. I don't think I'd put a chair rail in this room - it's not very big and I think that would pull back back in. I'm enjoying the gray as a neutral for sure!
