Suddenly It's Cool and Dark

As expected life is busy, busy, busy these days what with training for my part time job in addition to all the usual stuff.  I can see it's going to be an adjustment period to figure out how to deal with meals and the household chores.  I'll be glad when I feel adjusted already!

On my last post Fran asked me about paying for Little Helen's wedding.  In fact, we are not paying for the entire thing.  Little Helen has lived on her own for 15 years and so is not a super young bride with no assets.  Her fiance is also well established.  However, we do want to contribute some and so will give them a lump sum of money to use as they please towards expenses.  I think this approach is fairly common, especially when the bride/groom have been living on their own for a while.  I do know some people (most recently a co-worker) who put themselves in debt and take out loans to pay for their child's wedding.  That is not something Mr. Helen and I would ever do, especially with thinking towards retirement in a couple short years.

It suddenly turned cool and fall-like around here which prompted me to make these glazed baked pumpkin donuts over the weekend.  They are absolutely delicious!

I will say that by the second day they were more sugar soaked than glazed.  I'm not sure why but maybe they need to be left to the air, rather than stored in a container. I'm going to contact the blogger who originally posted the recipe and ask her if this happened to her. Also, the next time I make them, unless we have company,  I will make a half recipe because it makes a full dozen and of course, that's way too many donuts for just us.

Seems like we really have gone into fall - overnight temps in the low 50s and even in the 40s by week's end. September is always the hardest month for me to stay motivated with my early morning workouts.  It seems like a matter of days between going from shorts, short sleeves and beautiful sunrise runs to utter darkness and long sleeves with capris or pants.  That initial step out the door where the cool air hits sometimes makes me want to turn around and go back in the house.  I've been sticking to my Neila Rey workouts and if I get all hot and sweaty before I run, that makes it even more challenging. This morning I spent the 15 minutes I was having coffee with the dueling devil and angel on my shoulders alternately trying to talk me out of even working out and pumping me up with how great I'll feel when I'm done.  I know I'll be acclimated in a couple weeks but right now it's hard.

And yeah, I did the workout and a 5K run so the angel won.

  1. Wow, good on you for the angel winning! I have such a hard time making myself go outside to workout when it is cold!

    1. I do too and then I seem to acclimate. Cold weather running will give you some of your fastest times but you've got to have the gear.

  2. That first blast of cold air is such a challenge - I know I complain about running in the heat, but at least you're not freezing right at the start. I bet you did feel great afterward, though - good job kicking the devil to the curb! :)

    Those donuts. Holy yum.

    1. Well, you know very well how much running is mental!

  3. Thanks for explaining about the wedding. Basically it's the same then as here where the parents usually pay for the wedding dress/suit. It comes down to the same thing. I would never accept it that my parents would be in debt for my wedding and I bet little Helen wouldn't even. It's all clear to me now, thanks.

I totally get what you mean about the weather. It's not really cold here, I can still wear capri's in the morning but it's dark. I started this week serious with my workouts and the home workouts I don't mind I'm inside but that first step out of the door in the morning, I totally get you.

For the first time in years I have adjusted my working hours so I can start my morning workout a bit later and so far it works. For the past years I worked from 7:30 am to 4 pm and got up at 5:15 am. Now I work from 08:00 am till 4.30 pm and look at my workout for the next day how long it will take me and set my alarm so that I'm ready at 6:30 am. I have an hour for showering, breakfast, make-up/hair and letting Bella out for a walk. So far it works perfect.

    1. Funny I adjusted mine from 8-4:30 to 7:30-4 because I kept noticing I was ready to leave my house around 7 every day. I like getting off that half hour earlier and I'm sure I'll love it this winter. I should be able to get home before it gets dark.

  4. When I make donuts, I don't glaze any that will be kept until the next day because that happens with powdered sugar glaze. It soaks in from moisture. You can leave them open to air and the glaze will stay hard, but then the donuts aren't as fresh. I think I will make these this weekend and do a maple glaze. Yum!!

I am getting bummed about morning rides now. It's pretty cold to ride for breakfast. It was 40 degrees this morning and that just isn't so enjoyable just to get a ride in.

    1. That is a great tip for glazing the donuts. Let me tell you these donuts are DELICIOUS. I'm definitely making them again.

I saw a biker this morning and even though it was 51 I kept thinking that it must feel awfully cold when you're on a bike!

  5. Ha - glad the 5k angel won! I was 32 when I got married - and our entire wedding/honeymoon cost us $2,000. It helped that his parents let us stay in one of their rental condos for free, so it was basically our travel expense, our wedding dinner and a weekend in Key West for our honeymoon. All of 5 people were in attendance. My twin sister? She got married when she was 27, had 100+ people at their wedding any maybe spent $25k? And to this day, after nearly 20 years of marriage, has never used a piece of her 12 piece china set!
